The history of games goes back thousands of years. The first play dates in the Museum's collection of 16th century. Games rules and the main objective of any game is to win, if it is played by individuals or teams. Some games are also designed to be used as learning tools.

Games

The strategy game and the running game are the two main types of board game. The racing game appears in many forms: education, ethics, competition and fun. A racing game involves two or more players competing against each other to win.

Racing games can be simple or complex. The simplest require a single set piece that moves along a track on a playing surface from end to end, for example, snakes and ladders.
Strategy games are usually played by two people and require at least some degree of skill. These can be subdivided into different categories: war games that involve capturing, like chess and checkers, hunting or chasing games, such as fox and geese and Chinese Chequers and alignment games, such as hopscotch and Connect-4.

Although the standard cards have been around for centuries, card games for children have only appeared relatively recently. Families, for example, was published in the 1860s.

Playing cards are considered as having originated in China around the 7th century and were introduced in Europe in the late 1300s. They were and continue to be used for gaming, skill games and divination. Playing cards aimed specifically at children did not appear until the 18th century. Unlike adult playing cards, cards for children usually have pictures on them, are education and are often published by the same companies who made games.

Outdoor Games

The Museum's collection of table and outdoor games, balls, a game in ancient Egypt and Subbuteo, a football game, invented in the mid 20th century.

People in ancient Egypt and pre-Christian Rome played marbles and the game was played in England for at least four centuries. 18th century to early 20th century, Germany was the center of world trade marble.
