Mario Racing Games

I just got Gran Turismo on my PSP and it seems to happen. My acceleration increases about 2-3x as much when I'm right behind a car.
Is this something that the game develops add to make it fair? Or does it have something to do with nature / physics? As this would actually happen in real life?
I was just wondering because it seems like a lot of racing games have the same technique.
