when you are in it, the aircraft behaves like a helicopter. So when you first get, as you would fly a helicopter. Then when your in the air, use the right control stick (thats what it was on PS2, assuming that the same thing on Xbox) to tilt the thrusters forward, pushing the joystick perverse, and you have to act and control like a regular jet / airplane.

I had the same problem, but I got it on PS2. Try moving one of the analog sticks for about 10 seconds (it takes time for the after burners to move) and then when you want to relocate to the new mode, hold the same analog stick down.
